The Conditional Clause
In English, the verb in the conditional clause is usually used in the past when it's a hypothetical situation. If it is a known fact then the present is used.
If I was/were told that you ate insects, I would think you were crazy- Si me dijeran que comes insectos, pensaría que estás loco
If he had a car that went faster, he would be very dangerous- Si él tuviera un coche que fuera más rápido, sería muy peligroso
If he thought that his wife was a prostitute , he would be furious - Si él pensara que su mujer es/fuera prostituta, estaría furioso
If he knew that his wife is a prostitute, he would be furious- Sí el supiera que su mujer es prostituta, estaría furioso
